Bharatmala Pariyojana is a flagship, umbrella road and highways development program launched by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Government of India. It represents a massive expansion of the national highway network, subsuming all existing highway projects including the legacy National Highways Development Project (NHDP).
The program focuses on optimizing efficiency of road freight and passenger movements across the country. Its targets are organized under key components: (1) Economic Corridors (constructing 9,000 km of new industrial road corridors), (2) Inter-Corridor & Feeder Routes (connecting economic corridors with feeder links), (3) National Corridor Efficiency Program (decongestion of busy choke points through bypasses and ring roads), (4) Border & International Connectivity Roads (facilitating trade with neighboring countries), and (5) Green-field Expressways (creating new access-controlled express highways).
Additionally, Bharatmala implements a hub-and-spoke logistics model by building Multi-Modal Logistics Parks (MMLPs) to coordinate cargo movements between rail, road, and waterways.
