Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) is a comprehensive food security welfare scheme launched by the Government of India. It is the largest food security program in the world, benefiting over 80 crore poor and vulnerable citizens across the country.
Under the scheme, beneficiaries receive free food grains (rice, wheat, or coarse grains) through the Public Distribution System (PDS). The program includes two categories of beneficiaries under the National Food Security Act (NFSA): Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) households, who receive 35 kg of free food grains per household per month, and Priority Households (PHH), who receive 5 kg of free food grains per person per month.
To ensure transparency and prevent leakage, grain distribution utilizes Aadhaar-linked ration cards and biometric verification at Fair Price Shops (FPS) using e-POS devices.
