Additional Details
The Sagarmala Programme is the flagship initiative of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Government of India, to harness the country's 7,517 km long coastline and 14,500 km of potentially navigable waterways. The mission focuses on port-led development to reduce overall logistics costs for both domestic and EXIM cargo.
The Sagarmala framework is built upon five strategic pillars: (1) Port Modernization & New Port Development (upgrading capacity and machinery), (2) Port Connectivity Enhancement (connecting ports to consumption centers via rail, road, and pipelines), (3) Port-Led Industrialization (locating energy-intensive industries and manufacturing clusters near ports), (4) Coastal Community Development (skilling coastal populations and upgrading fisheries/harbors), and (5) Coastal Shipping & Inland Water Transport (promoting passenger and cargo transport through waterways to reduce carbon footprint).
Sagarmala works in convergence with other national initiatives such as Make in India, Startup India, and dedicated freight corridors, enabling sustainable maritime logistics.
